PROJECT:

Use illustration to create an enticing opening spread for a

magazine editorial.

MY DIRECTION:

The article I chose to go with is from a scientific magazine. I sought to create a more artistic and eye catching graphic that is typically used in scientific sources. Opposed to using a scientific diagram or graph, my solution was to use oil paint textures, interesting colors, and hand drawn type to draw the reader in.

PROJECT:

Use illustration to create a book cover for a classic novel of our choice.

MY DIRECTION:

My choice of content was Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; a tale thats usually portrayed as a frightening horror, but is truly a tragic tale of heartbreak. With my illustration I’ve created a heart synonymous with Frankenstein’s monster; all sewed up and pieced together. Half of the heart is encapsulated in a frozen ice block; this block represents the coldness that the monster feels from his creator, the other humans in his community, and from the world in general. This also represents a physical coldness as much of the story takes place in Arctic conditions and mountainous locations. The outside of the cover also has stitching detail to mirror the heart and feel synonymous.

PROJECT:

Use illustration to create a compelling concert poster for a band of our choice.

MY DIRECTION:

From the band Babes in Toyland comes aesthetics that combine the worn and torn look of grunge with the girly aesthetics associated with dolls. My design displays a tabletop view consisting of a vandalized doily and the culprit, a three headed doll representing the members of the band; as well as other items one would find on the table of 90s grunge stars.

client: OPDAG Paper Doll Convention

The annual paper doll convention is a chance for artists and collectors to view exhibits, collect souvenirs, bid in raffles, attend themed nights and much more.

My poster design uses the hand-done aspect in my illustration style and conveys how paper doll clothing would look strewn across a table messily. I’ve also incorporated stitching as a border.

The extension I’ve created is a paper doll clothing organizer. It is to be given to guests as they arrive so they can easily store and organize not only the clothes previously in their collection, but the new ones they receive as well.

Posters and Campaigns.

social awareness campaign posters

client:Food Empowerment Project

Food Deserts are a life threatening issue that are not comment prevalent to those who aren’t affected by them. My group and I created a fantasy-photo campaign to help the Food Empowerment Project educate about them. The goal of our campaign is to show how big of an issue food deserts really are by creating a conflict of reality within our images.

client:Save Costal Wildlife

We are often berated about the importance of not using straws, cutting our plastic soda rings, and reducing our waste. While these are important, whats often ignored is how much harm fishing companies contribute to the health decline of our oceans.

Within my posters I have displayed different numeral facts with explanations at the bottom. My intention is to grab viewers attention with bold statistics that will make them want to keep reading. My first poster breaks down 600 years into smaller increments down to seconds, making such a long time period more digestible for us to imagine. The second poster displays several different ways that fishing corporations harm ocean species. Corporations need to be help responsible for their negative contributions and I hope to help consumers realize this.

client: Songs for a new World

Songs for a new World is a musical theatre show produced by Jason Robert Brown. The show could be considered a theatrical song cycle, or an abstract musical, because of its uncommon show structure. This show uses songs from several different venues and events , from different time periods and settings, all connected by a common theme: the moment of decision.

My design has several different intentions relating to the show. The same night sky has looked over all of these characters as they've made these decisions, no matter what time or place. My imagery also references the idea of fate being "written in the stars". Constellations are also related to astrology and why things happen or people act in certain ways.

Not relying on a specific religion or faith, my design uses a whimsical background to replicate the delicateness in which life and death happen and interact. Easy to read spacing and hierarchy can help the reader identify the correct classes.

artist: Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a genre-bending band that one very defining factor: all the members are virtual. Keeping this in mind, I created a graphic on the title page to convey this. Throughout the article it was intentional for me to include photos of the virtual members, as well as their (human) creators.
